After years of grid testing, real hardware defects are rare; most failures are firmware state machine and control details. These five are the most frequent, ordered by fix cost.
1. Anti-islanding: nuisance trips and refusals
Nuisance trips usually come from a RoCoF threshold set too low or frequency measurement jitter caused by voltage harmonics; refusals come from insufficient gain in active detection, which cancels out when multiple units run in parallel. Keep margin on the RoCoF threshold (Brazil requires above 2 Hz/s) and validate parallel operation.
2. ROCOF: right threshold, wrong delay
UK G99 requires a fixed 500 ms delay that may not be bypassed by cycle counting; South Africa requires disconnection within 2 s above 1.5 Hz/s. Firmware often makes the delay configurable without a lower bound and fails the test.
3. Reactive response time during FRT
China requires dynamic reactive current within 60 ms; Europe and Italy define recovery windows. Slow response usually comes from an over-long measurement filter or insufficient decoupling bandwidth. Build a dedicated fast path for FRT detection.
4. Reactive capability margins
EN 50549 requires cos phi 0.90 under-excited to 0.90 over-excited; Italy requires Q up to ±48.43% Pn at any P. The boundary at low active and high reactive power is where current limiting bites first, so define whether reactive or active power has priority.
5. DC injection and communication priority
DC limits differ (China 0.5%, UK 0.25%, Italy 0.5% or 20 mA), so design to the strictest. On communications, Italy requires DSO remote reactive control to override local logic and Australia requires the DRM interface; if local strategy wins in firmware, commissioning fails.
Pre-test checklist
- List protection settings per market and check every firmware parameter, including delay lower bounds.
- Run a parallel anti-islanding test, not just a single unit.
- Capture FRT waveforms and measure 10%-90% reactive current rise time.
- Verify reactive capability at low-P high-Q boundary points.
- Confirm priority between remote commands and local strategy, and the fallback behaviour.
