There are roughly four certification standards currently in common use for capacitors in electronic devices: UL 810, UL 1414, UL 1283, and the newly released UL 60384-14. Of these, the first three safety standards apply only to the evaluation of capacitors or components intended for sale in the “North American market,” whereas UL 60384-14, being harmonized with the IEC 60384-14 standard, allows manufacturers to use UL’s one-stop service to obtain certification valid in most countries worldwide through CB cross-certification, thereby enhancing their international competitive advantage.
To help manufacturers grasp the key requirements of the various UL standards for capacitors before applying for certification, Arnool Testing has compiled the following table listing the scope of application for the four UL standards for capacitors, with important considerations noted below the table.
| Standard Name | Scope of Application |
| UL 810 | Applies to capacitors permitted for use in end-user electrical products, such as motor starting capacitors and power factor correctors in fluorescent lighting fixtures, for which only structural review of the capacitors is required |
| UL 1283 | Applies to series/parallel RF suppression filter assemblies composed of capacitors that have passed UL1414 (or UL60384-14) |
| UL 1414 | Capacitors used in “audio-visual products” may be connected in series with the live wire, across the live wire and ground bypass, or in an antenna coupling circuit (Note: The sixth edition no longer permits the use of capacitors in double-protection circuits against electric shock) |
| UL 60384-14 | Applicable to capacitors used in “electronic equipment.” In addition to harmonizing with the IEC 60384-14 standard, it is also compatible with CSA E60384-14 and IEC 60384-14—all of which trace back to IEC 60384-1—and additionally lists four specific requirements for certification in the North American market. This standard is intended to eventually fully replace all product requirements currently covered in UL1414, as well as some of the requirements for single-capacitor RF suppression filters covered in UL1283. |
