The purpose of a fuse is to protect electronic products and components in the event of an overcurrent or short circuit. In particular, these devices prevent overheating or fire under fault conditions. Therefore, a fuse can be considered to have two functions: determining the continuous fault current and breaking the circuit when the fault current exceeds the maximum continuous fault current.
Fuses generally contain an internal element, typically housed within a casing and connected to contact terminals. When a fault current occurs, the high current flowing through the fuse melts this element, thereby breaking the connection. This is because the device has low impedance when the connection is cold, but its impedance increases as it heats up until it reaches a known melting point. In other words, the device transitions from a solid to a liquid or gaseous state within a defined time frame, thereby reducing the current to zero.
