CB Certification:
A Detailed Explanation of the Market Access Pass for Electrical Products
01
Definition and Background:
A Certification Born Out of Global Trade Needs
CB Certification is a safety certification system for electrical products based on International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards, administered by the IEC’s Electrical Products Testing and Certification Organization (IECEE). Its purpose is to promote international trade by reducing redundant testing and evaluation of electrical products during certification in different countries and regions worldwide through a unified certification process and standards.
Scope of Certification:
Covers a Full Matrix of Electrical Product Categories
The scope of CB certification is extremely broad, covering virtually all common electrical products. In the household appliance sector, this ranges from large white goods such as refrigerators, air conditioners, and washing machines to small kitchen appliances such as microwave ovens, rice cookers, and electric kettles; In the lighting sector, this includes LED fixtures, fluorescent lamps, incandescent bulbs, and smart lighting devices. Whether traditional or emerging smart lighting products, all must pass CB certification to ensure safety performance; In the field of electronic devices, products such as computers, printers, cell phone chargers, and power adapters, as well as various electronic components—including resistors, capacitors, and inductors—are also included in the CB certification system; In addition, industrial and special-purpose electrical products—such as power tools, wires and cables, low-voltage electrical appliances, and photovoltaic modules—are also subject to this certification.
Certification Process:
Rigorous and Standardized Operating Procedures
“
(1) Preliminary Preparation and Application for
Before applying for CB certification, enterprises must thoroughly understand the certification requirements and process and prepare all relevant technical documentation, including product manuals, circuit diagrams, parts lists, and certificates for key components. At the same time, companies must select a testing laboratory with CB accreditation; the list of accredited laboratories can be found on the IECEE official website. Once a laboratory is selected, the company must submit a formal certification application by completing the application form and paying the relevant fees.
“
(2) Product Testing Phase
Upon receiving the application, the CB testing laboratory will conduct comprehensive and rigorous testing of the product in accordance with the corresponding IEC standards. The test items are extensive and varied. In terms of electrical safety, tests include insulation resistance, dielectric strength, and ground resistance to prevent the risk of electric shock to users; mechanical safety tests focus on the product’s structural strength, stability, and resistance to mechanical injury; fire resistance tests simulate various extreme environments to evaluate the product’s flame-retardant capabilities under high temperatures and open flames; For electrical products with wireless communication capabilities, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing is also required to ensure the product does not interfere with other electronic devices and is itself immune to interference.
“
(3) Issuance of Reports and Certificate Applications
If the product successfully passes all tests, the CB testing laboratory will issue a detailed CB test report within the specified timeframe. Using the CB test report, companies may submit a certification application to the certification bodies of the IECEE member states where their target markets are located. These certification bodies will evaluate the product based on the CB test report and their respective national regulatory requirements. Upon successful audit, the country’s certification certificate will be issued, granting the product eligibility to enter the local market.
