AEC-Q102—what is the AEC-Q102 standard?

AEC-Q102 is a stress test standard for all discrete optoelectronic semiconductor components used in automotive electronics, both interior and exterior. It defines the minimum stress test requirements and test conditions for these components when vehicles are operated in various harsh environments (such as deserts, rain, snow, and smog). Each test in AEC-Q102 is designed to simulate the harsh environments that automotive discrete optoelectronic semiconductor components may encounter, thereby ensuring driving safety.

The test scope of AEC-Q102 is extensive, covering discrete devices such as LEDs, laser components, photodiodes, and phototransistors, comprising a total of 28 major categories. The validation process includes redefining the number of test samples, specifying methods for controlling LED junction temperature, and increasing gas corrosion exposure—all aimed at ensuring the components operate reliably in a wide range of potential environments.

The AEC-Q102 testing standard also emphasizes the reliability of optoelectronic devices. For example, it requires electrostatic discharge (ESD) testing for LED assemblies to ensure they meet specific standards for ESD immunity. In addition, pre-test conditioning is a crucial component of the AEC-Q102 standard, including pre-treatment testing of surface-mount devices (SMDs) in accordance with the requirements of JEDEC JESD22-A113.

The evolution of the AEC-Q102 standard also reflects a proactive response to technological advancements and market demands. The AEC (Automotive Electronics Council) officially published the AEC-Q102 REV standard in March 2017, followed by the release of an updated version, AEC-Q102 REV A, in April 2020, which has since become the current international standard for automotive LEDs.

AEC-Q102 is a rigorous testing standard for discrete optoelectronic semiconductor components used in automotive electronics. It aims to ensure the reliability and stability of these components under various environmental conditions, thereby providing a strong guarantee for automotive safety and performance.
