AEC-Q101 is a testing standard for automotive discrete devices, primarily specifying requirements for automotive discrete devices and components. This standard covers key components in automotive applications, such as automotive optocouplers, interface converters, touchscreen control panels, and reels of discrete devices.

The importance of AEC-Q101 certification lies in determining whether devices can pass stress tests in their intended applications and whether they can deliver a specific level of quality and reliability. To this end, it defines minimum stress test requirements for discrete semiconductor devices (such as transistors and diodes) and provides corresponding reference test conditions.
In AEC-Q101 testing, the minimum temperature range for discrete semiconductors is set at -40°C to +125°C, while the minimum range for all LEDs is 40°C to 85°C. It is worth noting that the number of test samples is typically 77, and zero failures are required, which significantly enhances the reliability of the test.
The AEC-Q101 standard also establishes three levels of evaluation criteria based on different components: Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3. For example, Level 1 requires components to undergo 1,000 temperature cycles between -40°C and 125°C, while Level 3 imposes a more stringent requirement of 5,000 temperature cycles. The primary purpose of these cycle tests is to verify whether the electrical performance of the components—such as resistance and capacitance—has undergone significant changes and remains within acceptable limits.
AEC-Q101 also covers humidity-temperature cycling tests, in which components are subjected to multiple cycles in a high-temperature, high-humidity environment to assess their stability under high-humidity conditions. Specific evaluation criteria vary depending on the type of component.
AEC-Q101 standards are continuously updated in response to developments and demands in the automotive electronics sector. For example, in the latest version, descriptions of optical devices and related environmental stress and life tests have been removed, reflecting the standard’s rapid response to technological advancements and changing market demands.
AEC-Q101 is a rigorous testing standard that provides reliable quality assurance for discrete devices and components in the automotive industry, thereby ensuring the overall performance and safety of vehicles.
