IEC 61851 is a series of standards developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) to regulate electric vehicle charging equipment and charging systems. The IEC 61851 standards cover all aspects of the electric vehicle charging process, including charging interfaces, communication protocols, and safety requirements.

The main parts of the IEC 61851 standards include:

IEC 61851-1: Defines the basic concepts, terminology, and definitions for electric vehicle charging equipment, as well as the classification and identification of charging modes.

IEC 61851-21: Defines the basic requirements and test methods for AC-based electric vehicle charging equipment.

IEC 61851-22: Defines the basic requirements and test methods for DC-based electric vehicle charging equipment.

IEC 61851-23: Defines the communication interface protocols between electric vehicles and charging equipment to enable control and monitoring of the charging process.

IEC 61851-24: Defines the safety requirements for electric vehicle charging equipment, including safety protection for users and the environment.

These standards are designed to ensure the safety, interoperability, and reliability of electric vehicle charging equipment, thereby promoting the widespread adoption of electric vehicles and the development of charging infrastructure. IEC 61851 The standards also provide an important foundation for international cooperation and technical exchange within the electric vehicle industry.

When using and implementing the IEC 61851 standards, the following points should be noted:

Compliance Check: Ensure that the selected electric vehicle charging equipment complies with the applicable IEC 61851 standards, as well as other relevant national or regional regulations and standard requirements. It is best to select products that have already been certified to ensure they meet the standard’s requirements.

Installation Location: Install the charging equipment in a suitable location, away from water sources and flammable materials, and ensure there is sufficient surrounding space to allow heat generated during charging to dissipate, as well as to ensure the equipment is easily accessible and operable.

Power Connection: Ensure that the power connection meets standard requirements, including the voltage and current of the power lines, as well as the grounding connection. Do not use damaged power lines, plugs, or outlets to avoid electrical safety hazards.

Operational Precautions: When operating the charging equipment, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and strictly adhere to safety operating procedures. Avoid operating the charging equipment under severe weather conditions, such as thunderstorms or extreme temperatures.

Regular Inspection and Maintenance: Regularly inspect the condition and performance of the charging equipment, including checking for wear on connecting cables, charging ports, and charging guns. Replace damaged or aged components promptly to ensure the safety and reliability of the equipment.

Troubleshooting: If a malfunction or abnormal condition is detected in the charging equipment, immediately stop using it and contact professional maintenance personnel for inspection and repair to ensure the equipment operates normally.

User Training: Provide training to users of the charging equipment, covering topics such as proper connection of the equipment, safe operating procedures, and emergency response protocols, to enhance users’ understanding of correct usage and safety awareness.
