V2G: Unleashing the Potential of Electric Vehicles to Build a Green Energy Future!

I. Why Do We Need V2G?

Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming increasingly important in our daily lives, and so is V2G.

Although electric vehicle technology represents a significant step forward in addressing global environmental issues, the ever-increasing demand for energy also poses serious challenges to the stability of the power grid. For example, what would happen if tens of thousands or even millions of electric vehicle owners charged their vehicles simultaneously? Would this cause the power grid to become overloaded to the point of failure?

Renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power are developing rapidly, but they cannot generate electricity continuously; for example, they cannot provide stable, sustained power during sunset or when there is no wind. This intermittency can lead to supply shortages, especially in the evenings when people are returning home from work.

To maximize the benefits of renewable energy, we need a technology that allows electric vehicle batteries to store energy when idle and feed that energy back into the grid for use when needed.

II. V2G How Does It Work?

Simply put, V2G enables electric vehicles to feed their unused electricity back into the grid to supplement renewable energy generation or provide support during peak demand periods.

It is estimated that by 2030, there will be approximately 200 million electric vehicles worldwide, most of which will be idle and connected to EV charger for the majority of the time. By leveraging V2G technology, we can combine these vehicles into a mobile “power plant” capable of efficiently charging and discharging as needed at different times of the day.

Since most electric vehicles charge overnight, V2G enables them to utilize more renewable energy during periods of low demand while ensuring their batteries are fully charged by the next morning. With the support of embedded V2G software, car owners can also customize optimal usage times and power output levels based on their lifestyles and driving habits.

III. Advantages and Disadvantages of V2G

Advantages:

In addition to improving grid stability, electric vehicle owners can generate income from the electricity they feed back into the grid, which significantly helps reduce the vehicle’s total cost of ownership over its lifecycle. For the grid, V2G can also help cover part of the costly infrastructure upgrade expenses, which in turn helps all end-users lower their electricity costs. From an environmental perspective, V2G reduces carbon emissions by helping electric vehicles make better use of renewable energy. Through software specifically designed for V2G, electric vehicles can charge when there is a surplus of renewable energy and can even feed electricity directly into the grid when generation from sources such as solar and wind power is low.

Disadvantages:

Although V2G technology offers many unique advantages, it still faces some challenges. As the frequency of charging and discharging increases, V2G may affect the service life of electric vehicle batteries. At the same time, the V2G conversion process also results in energy losses, as current efficiency typically ranges between 50% and 70%.

For automakers, implementing V2G functionality requires not only supporting software but also specialized hardware (primarily bidirectional inverters). Consequently, integrating V2G incurs higher costs for manufacturers, which in turn limits its availability to specific models and trim levels.

IV. What is the difference between V1G and V2G?

V1G, commonly referred to as “smart charging,” is currently the more affordable and common option for electric vehicles. Compared to the bidirectional V2G, V1G is unidirectional and can adjust the timing and speed of electric vehicle charging to provide grid frequency response and load balancing services. Although V1G cannot feed power back into the grid, it provides valuable “load shifting” during periods of high charging demand, a feature that helps maintain the integrity of local energy networks.

Cleaner, More Reliable Energy

By strengthening the power grid and maximizing the use of renewable resources—not to mention generating income for vehicle owners—V2G is one of the key drivers behind the global adoption of electric vehicles. As automakers rapidly electrify passenger and commercial vehicles, V2G will significantly improve the way we produce, store, and use energy, helping us accelerate the transition to zero-emission driving.
